Bigay Puso sa Pasko celebrates its 14th year this upcoming Christmas

Last Christmas, we visited the Aeta Mahbukun tribe in Orani, Bataan for the first time. They are one of the five main Aeta groups in Central Luzon and are considered one of the least known and documented indigenous tribes. Their name means "to separate" from the rest of the Aeta language groups. We were welcomed with open arms by the local tribe elders and leaders, and the group put on their traditional dress to perform for us in celebration of Pasko.

The tradition continues this year, which marks the 14th year of Bigay Puso sa Pasko, our annual Christmas outreach program for children in the Philippines. We are excited to return to our communities for Pasko once again, including Payatas in Quezon City, Sitio Culasisi in Antipolo, Rizal (home of our Mountain View Free Learning Center), the indigenous Aeta community in Orani, Bataan, and our favorite local Metro Manila neighborhood - Poblacion.

Background

Bigay Puso sa Pasko (Give Your Heart on Christmas) is an annual Christmas outreach program for children in underserved communities in the Philippines. The project was founded by teacher Shirley E. Alambra in 2011 at Lupang Pangako Elementary School in Payatas after she saw that her students had no food or gifts at their previous Christmas parties, some eating sardines as their only holiday meal. Built on a former landfill, Payatas is a predominantly urban poor barangay in the northeastern district of Quezon City and remains one of the most impoverished areas in Metro Manila.

With the help of sponsors, she provided 100 students with meals from Jollibee, groceries, and toys at the first Bigay Puso sa Pasko event, complete with a special appearance by Jollibee. The event became an annual tradition and has grown to include over 3,500 participants since it began in 2011.
